VBA stands for Visual Basic for Applications. I will show how simply but powerfull add-ins can be created just using the VBA – resource Excel has in any of its default packages. The latter type is a little more complicated to be developed, since it is necessary to use Visual Studio. So what would an Excel add-in be? There are two types of add-ins, the VBA and the COM ones. Microsoft Office is the one we are talking about, specifically Excel, but it is possible to create add-ins for other MS applications, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, among others. In real world, add-ins are developed in situations that it is easier to create the add-in than develop another whole application from scratch. It is usually made for big applications, when the out of the box functions do not fullfill all the needs. An add-in – or add-on – is an extension to a program created for adapting new functionalities to it.
